Plasma High-Definition Television That Supports Stereoscopic 3D

Panasonic said that it had developed the industry’s first 50” plasma high-definition television that supports stereoscopic 3D output with the help of shutter glasses. The company also said that it would ship its stereo 3D equipment in 2010 after Blu-ray disc association (BDA) approves the “3D expanded standard”. Panasonic’s newly developed 50” plasma features the so-called high-speed 3D drive and crosstalk reduction technologies to improve output of crisp and clear full-HD 3D images. As plasma display panels (PDPs) are self-illuminating device with full motion-picture resolution, they offer fast response time and are suitable to display fast-moving images. The high-speed 3D drive technology involves the development of new panel materials and chips that accelerate the pixel illumination while maintaining brightness. Panasonic also developed the crosstalk reduction technology using newly-developed phosphors with short luminescence decay time and illumination control technology to reduce double-images that occur when left- and right-eye image are alternated on the panel. All-in-all, the newly developed features promise clear images with accurate color reproduction even in 3D mode; obviously, they also improve image clarity in 2D mode. Even though Panasonic does not mention refresh rate of the PDP, it should be not lower than 120Hz at 1920×1080 resolution (progressive scan, 1080p). The company relies on the so-called shutter glasses method to create 3D effect: the PDP displays time sequential images for the left and right eyes on the display frame by frame, whereas the glasses opens and closes the shutter in synchronization with the left- and right-eye images alternately shown on the PDP. The method has obvious drawback: viewers must sit under special angle to the HDTV. Moreover, many claim that shutter glasses cause headaches. Panasonic’s 50” PDP prototype will be exhibited at Ceatec Japan 2009 trade show, which will be held in Tokyo from October 6th to October 10th.

Suss Microtec Secures a “Strategic Edge” in a Booming 3D Market

Suss Microtec (a back-end semiconductor tool vendor Germany) joins the Taiwan-based 3D chip integration equipment consortium Adstac. The company expects that the move secures a “strategic edge” in a booming future market. Suss hopes to participate in the production value chain for a market it believes will offer strong growth in the future. A study predicted that between 2008 -2012, production volume is expected to be close to one billion units. Stacked memory devices and CMOS image sensors will make up for the largest part of 3D chips; also LEDs are going to jump onto the 3D train. Suss will join a research program of the Taiwan-based Industrial Technology Research Institute. Within the scope of its research, the institute has set up Adstac (Advanced Stacked-System Technology and Application Consortium), a multinational consortium dedicated to set up a demo production line for 3D chip manufacturing on 300mm wafers. Suss spokesperson said, “We want to join the research activities. This gives us a strategic position when commercial production will take off.” source: eetimes.eu

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 3D: Food and Money Rain, too?

Sony’s “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs” stayed sunny at the nation’s box office with $24.6 million at 3,119, easily topping downbeat debuts of Disney’s “Surrogates,” MGM’s “Fame” and Overture’s “Pandorum.” The 3D toon took in $5.6 million Friday, doubled that Saturday to $11.2 million and grossed an estimated $7.8 million Sunday. Rory Bruer of Sony pointed to strong word of mouth leading to expansion of the audience well beyond the core family and kids demo. “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs” will lose most of its 3D screens, though it will continue to play in 3D at 127 Imax venues, where it’s already grossed $5 million. “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs” showed decent holding power overseas with $4.9 million at 1,375 in 26 markets, with the U.K. seeing a 9% decline to $2.3 million. The “Cloudy” foreign cume has hit $13.3 million.

Google Earth Climate Change 3D Map

Google Earth mapping tool is to simulate on a 3D map of the world the predicted effects of climate change until the year 2100. It uses the data provided by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the search giant created new layers for Google Earth showing the range of expected temperature and precipitation changes under different global emissions scenarios that could occur throughout the century. Known as the COP15, the meeting in Copenhagen is shaping up as the critical venue for forging a global deal to reduce carbon emissions. Users can view the effects of climate change on their own country either by installing a plug-in into Google Earth or via a special web page. Initially only temperature and precipitation changes can be viewed but Google plans to add several new layers and videos in the coming weeks. The goal here is to allow people visualize the impacts of climate change on 3D. “If we were not to dramatically reduce our emissions, the global average temperature is expected to rise as much as 4 or more degrees Celsius by the end of this century, and that would cause severe damage to natural systems and human health and wellbeing,” Gore says in the introductory video.

World’s Highest-Resolution 3D Map of the Moon.

Chinese experts announced that the country’s space scientists have completed the world’s highest-resolution 3D map of the moon. The map is based on image data obtained by a charge-coupled device (CCD) stereo camera carried by Chang’e-1, China’s first lunar probe vehicle, launched Oct 2007. The spatial resolution of the map – measured by the distance of two features within an image that can be clearly defined – is 500 meters. Liu Xianlin, head of the expert team, said the map could greatly help study the features, laws and creation of the moon’s surface and deepen the understanding of lunar geology and its evolution. “It would also pave the way for setting scientific objectives in future lunar probe projects,” said Liu, an academician from the Chinese Academy of Surveying and Mapping. source: taragana
