Visit your perfect holiday destination in stereoscopic 3D!
The global tourism industry spends millions of dollars every year in an attempt to promote their specific destination to potential tourists. To spread the awareness of the location and attract tourists, countries use websites and brochures filled with mesmerizing images as well as offering promotional DVD’s built up with beautiful and happy people to help generate tourism. As we enter the new decade the tourism industry has decided that it is time to make a change! So now tourism offices worldwide are planning to release video footage of destinations in stereoscopic 3D!
By capturing a location in stereoscopic 3D and re-creating its audible environment, viewers will be able to experience the destination as if they were really there. So if a beach resort in Thailand was being promoted, the viewer would be face to face with 3D trees and lapping waves whilst being relaxed by the sound of the ocean.
Imagine seeing the beautiful beaches of the Bahamas or the glorious ski slopes of the Austrian mountains in full depth on a 3D LCD screen or witnessing a wrap-around stereoscopic 3D HMD presentation at a trade show. The new idea and technology allows tourism boards to present potential customers with a fascinating multi sensory experience by simply arming their marketing staff with a laptop and a HMD. Youtube 3D is currently hosting various examples of this 3D tourism grabbing content. So grab your red and cyan 3D specs and take a look.

An example of how the 3D content looks without the viewing glasses.
For high definition offline presentations with surround sound all that is needed is a capable laptop and a brand new 3D enabled projector, such as the DepthQ HD.

Stereoscopic 3D production is set to go mobile!
Mass investment into stereoscopic 3D broadcasting has finally begun! In the UK, BSkyB has just commissioned ‘Telegenic’ to build them a mobile broadcast truck which is specifically used for stereoscopic 3D production! The specialist S3D camera rigs which will be used are thought to be being purchased from the Californian Company, 3ality Digital. These 3ality rigs are currently being trialed at the ATP World Tour tennis Finals in London’s 02 Arena.
According to Broadcastnow.co.uk the ‘Telegenic’ trucks 3D area will focus on providing gallery space for the 3D stereographers and it will also contain the equipment necessary for handling and synchronizing the two full-resolution signals at the exact same time.

A taster of what BSkyB's S3D broadcast truck will look like.
The mobile broadcast units aim is to use one stereographer per camera system. These technicians will set the 3D convergence point by using a specially set up screen and they will also have control of 3alitys stereo image processor system which is responsible for driving the 3D cameras. The person in charge of directing the project will simply cut the cameras feed by watching it on a 3D screen. 90 % of the mobile broadcasting unit will feature regular HD capable components and it is set to cost only a small amount more to build than your usual HD truck. Included in the trucks equipment listing will be two Sony SRW-5800 VTR’S, a Calec audio desk, a Vizrt graphics system and up to four EVS replay servers.

3D Television Service Bandwagon!
A 3D television drive is being planned by the Korea Communications Commission, which aims of having television stations beam terrestrial 3D broadcasts sometime in 2010. KCC will be going to give out license in January next year for the trial services for land-based HD 3D broadcasting.
One of the KCC official said, “Japan and Britain were first to test 3D television broadcasting through satellite networks, beaming programs for about an hour per day. However, we want to take it a step further, being the world’s first country to provide 3D television with HD picture quality through terrestrial networks.”
“We are expecting interest from television stations, electronics makers and other members of the technology community. After we license a 3D television broadcaster in January, we expect the preparations to start in February, with 3D trial services beginning sometime between then and the second half of next year. The trial services will be vital for testing the picture quality of the 3D broadcasts, and also prepare the foundation for standardizing technologies.”
While KCC is working out on its 3D endeavor, CJ Hello Vision and TU Media, a cable television company and a mobile TV operator respectively, are also planning to start trial 3D TV services by the end of 2009.
“We have yet to decide what would be the right level of consumer prices for 3D television services. Providing VOD titles free at first than charging for them later would be an option for us,” said a CJ HelloVision official.
This year, CJ HelloVision will be picking up 300 homes in Seoul and Busan, Korea to start testing its 3D VOD (video on demand) and aspire to spread out its 3D TV to 1000 homes by 2012.
Planning to release a handset by the end of the year, too, is TU Media. It will support both its own satellite pay-television services and the free, terrestrial mobile television services capable of 3D video.
Another television operator, Sky Life, is also in talks of getting 3D broadcasting, too next year.
A 3D television service bandwagon indeed!
Kim Jin-woong, a researcher from Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) said, “It remains to be seen whether 3D television will become a standard for consumer entertainment, or fizzle out as 3D movies did decades ago. If the industry finds a way to lower the prices for the required devices and also acquire more content, 3D television will have a chance to acquire staying power.”

Spielberg’s 3D Tin Tin adaptation still years away?
How well do you remember Tin Tin? Very well? Vaguely? A little bit?
Well I’m afraid that your memory of Tin Tin will have to stay that way, because according to Peter Jackson the Hollywood 3D adaptation of the red haired adventurer won’t be viewable for another two years due to the amount of post-production work involved on the project.
The film is fully cut together and now work is beginning on Steven Spielbergs 3D adaptation of the old animated programme, to transform the raw footage into a fully finished film said Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings Trilogy, King Kong), who will be taking a producing credit on this project.
According to Jackson; “Tintin is great. It’s made. The movie is cut together and now we are turning it into a fully-rendered film. So the movie, to some degree, exists in a very rough state.”
The initial plan for the proposed trilogy was to have Spielberg direct the first movie, then have Jackson take the second and another undecided film maker create the third. Unfortunately though, Universal dismissed the project which led to a downscaling, so now the film will be released through Paramount and Sony. Tin Tin was confirmed to be shot in full 3D, however Jackson was quick to point out that his next project ‘The Hobbit’ would not go down the three dimensional route.

Tin Tin certainly isnt rushing onto the big screen like he did into his dangerous adventures.
