Future of web search is ‘3D’ and ‘visual’, expert tells C4
This very interesting interview found on IWR News confronts and critiques the developments of and old and the potential for the future of web navigation and searching.
According to Weitz, the concept of 3D searching is already brought into the mainstream with applications such as Google Streetview.
Weitz, who is charged with luring more users to Microsoft’s search engine Bing away from rival Google search, also told C4 that amid internet’s evolution, it is crucial to understand the user’s search habits and his information needs.
He told the channel that currently, search “isn’t just where it needs to be” and that only 25% of all searches conducted has a satisfactory result on the first attempt. “You should expect better results, richer results. Bing’s creators are hoping their “visual search” will create a similar experience in areas such as online shopping, perhaps to the exclusion of keywords altogether.”
“People are using search engines to make fairly complex decisions, which is really bizarre when you think about how they began. Ten years ago it was simply a directory, now people are trying to figure out the best flight prices using a general purpose search engine.”
Coming heavily on Google’s search interface which providing links to queries rather than answering them, Weitz said: “The last piece is presenting the results not as simply more links, but as knowledge that we’ve either licensed from a provider or knowledge we’ve calculated from our huge computer resource.
“The whole point of search is to find something you don’t know about, so why do we expect you to know it? We should help you on that journey.” He said that in its quest for a 3D search tool, Bing is capitalising on social media sites such as Twitter where users are on both content providers and searchers.
Finally he added: “When you have 2,000 items, like handbags or cameras or TVs, the ability for a person to flip through [visual] results as well as structured data, like prices, is still a search but not necessarily what we think of as a search. We think that’s a different experience that works better there than a bunch of links.”
In its bid to increase the market share, Bing has already teamed up with answer engine Wolfram Alpha to bolster its results on areas including nutrition and mathematics. Bing also launched a UK version of its search engine this week to provide more localised, customised search results.

It seems that Virgin Media could possibly beat rival BSkyB to offering its viewers 3DTV content, however, unlike the service being offered by Sky TV next year, Virgin Media will be making 3DTV available on demand.
With channel 4′s week of 3D eyes have been widened to the new possibilities of a future of network rationed 3D television programing .
3DTV is going to be the biggest thing to hit the TV since HD, and with Virgin Media offering on-demand the viewer will be able to pick and choose content that they want to see.
It appears that faith in 3DTV is not as strong as it would first appear and this move is more like a flirtation than a full-blown commitment, as Virgin Media will cut the on-demand content during December, but we are on our way. 3D Tv coming soon tune next weekRelated Blogs

First 3D Solar Cell
Georgia Institute of Technology scientists recently developed a new solar cell model that does not require to be installed on usual surfaces, such as building rooftops. The technology makes use of nanostructures painted with light-sensitive dyes and produced directly from fibre optics.
The innovative approach led to the creation of a 3D photovoltaic (PV) system that can installed in places solor cells normally would not function. Materials science and engineering professor, Zhong Lin Wang, said that using the technology makes photovoltaic generators concealed, foldable and mobile.
Wang, explaining the new system’s fundamental principles, said that in every reflection within the fibre, a light interacts with the dye-coated nanostructures. This results to multiple light reflections inside the fibre and various reflections within the nanostructures, boosting the PV’s efficiency through increased light interactions with the dye molecules.
Dye-sensitized paint is a most innovative solution for generating electricity from sunlight. It is robust, making it suitable for such applications, and also cheap to manufacture, as it does not involve complex production processes. One draw back is it transfers energy at a lower speed than silicon-made photovoltaic materials, but with the help of nanostructures, the paint’s surface increases to reach efficiency further than that of a solar cell based on silicon.
Wang informed that the new technology could remove the visual issues of PV arrays on building infrastructures. Similarly, the 3D device is able to provide energy to parked cars and for charging mobile military equipments, where conventional solar panels are impractical to use.

Spatial View Brings Their Expertise to the Iphone
According to an announcement from Spatial View and Sony Music Entertainment Germany, the new 3DeeSlide iPhone and iPod accessory will allow users to watch glasses-free 3D movies.
3D movies are experiencing a great amount of popularity in theaters. A practical solution for viewing 3D content while outside of the home has not been developed yet at least one that doesn’t involve a separate headset or glasses.
Spatial View is a company specializing in stereoscopic 3D, offers the 3DeeSlide as the solution. Using a lenticular screen, this device slides over your iPhone or iPod Touch and allows the viewing of three-dimensional content without the need for glasses.
The viewing angle is a bit limited, but when it comes to mobile devices, there’s usually only one person watching. Users are recommended to keep their device at a 90 vertical viewing angle, perpendicular to their eye line. The sweet spot distance wise is between 12” and 16” according to Spatial View.
The 3DeeSlide will be available shortly from in Germany (one of the countries that Spatial View calls home) and is expected to be on Amazon soon after. The product will be available individually or bundled with Sony Music’s “forsenses” Blu-ray disc, though a price has not yet been announced.

Shigeru Miyamoto’s Opions on 3D and 2D gaming
2D vs 3D what is in store and where are we going? What usually starts out as a friendly discussion can easily turn into a venom spewing argument about what’s better, what sells more, and if the 2d era is still relevant.
It seems Mr. Miyamoto, someone who’s made his fair share of both 2d and 3d titles, weighed in on a similar discussion in the latest Nintendo Power. Miyamoto thinks that not everything needs to be 3d while conceding that there are huge benefits to it. On the the 2d front, he says these games should focus on fun and gameplay and not worry too much about visual experience.
What he says could be misconstrued to mean 2d games look like a pile of brownie mix, but on second thought you can take it to mean sometimes 2d games try too hard to be like 3d games and lose focus on the important aspect (i.e. FUN). This couldn’t be more true as New Super Mario Bros. Wii is a blast to play and doesn’t require too much skill to just pop in and have some fun .
2D gaming is far from being over although it’s fears are valid with the new breed of 3D games and gamers it is a great lesson in sustainability and weathering time. Lets just keep it fun and play nice there is room for 2D and 3D. Right?
