RealD the world’s 3D technology leader and electronics manufacturer, JVC Kenwood, recently announced their new partnership. RealD will license numerous technologies of theirs, including their proprietary stereoscopic RealD format to JVC. The RealD format and various other 3D technologies of theirs will be integrated within upcoming JVC 3D products.

HDMI Licensing announced that it will add 3D support to the HDMI 1.4 specifications which will allow consumers to watch 3D movies and play 3D video games on their High Definition TV sets.

HDMI, which stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface, allows devices like gaming consoles and set-top boxes to display media content on televisions sets and other output devices. The consumer electronic world is on the verge of a revolution in 3D technology as several major electronics manufacturers Sony, LG and Samsung announcing products with 3D support.

What do you think is better than HD (High Definition)? HD in 3D, of course! It would seem that the folks are DirecTV are planning to launch an all HD 3D channel sometime in 2010. This will be possible thanks to a new DirecTV satellite being launched sometime soon, and should be fully operational by March 2010. With that in place, you should be served a variety of movies and sports that conform to the latest 3D standard. The good news in here is that all this should work just fine with your DirectTV HD box after a firmware update; but the bad news is that you’ll probably a need a new TV that is compatible with 3D, and there should be plenty of such TVs announced at CES 2010. Will be all be watching 3D HD movies by the end of 2010? We certainly hope so.

Let’s start out by talking a little bit about the evolution of 3D. You may have heard the news recently about 3D Footage of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth shot back in 1953. You might think, wow, 3D was around way back then. However, if you are a 1950’s film fan, you might remember Vincent Price in the House of Wax or Alfred Hitchcock’s Dial M for Murder originally presented in 3D. The truth is, is that 3D, or more accurately Stereoscopic 3D, was first created with still pictures in the 1840’s with a device called a stereopticon. Think of it as an early forerunner of the Viewmaster, which started in 1939 and reached its height in popularity in the mid-60’s.

Last December 1-3, 2009, 3D Stereo Media was held at the Convention Center of Liège, Belgium. Literally, it was like a “Festival” of 3D technology and a Festival of 3D films. It showcased a series of seminars and presentations tackling everything about the aspects of 3D stereo, today and beyond. It also features an exhibit showing the state-of- the-art in many areas of 3D, in particular for 3D in the cinema and in the home for advertisement, and for communication.

2009 has been an amazing year. Fabulous and outrageous 3D movies invaded the theaters worldwide specially James Cameron’s AVATAR. Well, 2010 has plenty of interesting new films in store, as well as some remakes, reboots and sequels. Here are some of the 3D films to wait on this coming growling year of the Tiger

Alice in Wonderland (March)

An irresistible stunning film by Tim Burton. The traditional tale has been freshened with a blast of girl power, courtesy of writer Linda Woolverton (Beauty and the Beast). Alice, following a white rabbit into a hole and ending up in Wonderland, a place she visited 10 years before yet doesn’t remember.

HUBBLE 3D (Exclusively in IMAX on March)

Through the power of IMAX® 3D, Hubble 3D will enable moviegoers to journey through distant galaxies to explore the grandeur and mysteries of our celestial surroundings, and accompany space-walking astronauts as they attempt the most difficult and important tasks in NASA’s history. Hubble 3D will offer an inspiring and unique look into the Hubble Space Telescope’s legacy and highlight its profound impact on the way we view the universe and ourselves.

Toy Story 3 (June)

Woody, Buzz, and the rest of their toy-box friends are dumped in a day-care center after their owner, Andy, departs for college. And what will happen to them???

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (November)
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 is the first half for the finale of the last book of the Harry Potter series. More and more tragic deaths come, and it is up to him to make each of theirs a noble rest. He meets near-death moments and narrowly escapes them, but in the end, “neither could live, while the other survives”.

Tron Legacy (December)

Sam Flynn, the tech-savvy son of Kevin Flynn, looks into his father’s disappearance and finds himself pulled into the same world of fierce programs and gladiatorial games where his father has been living for 25 years. Along with Kevin’s loyal confidant, father and son embark on a life-and-death journey across a visually-stunning cyber universe that has become far more advanced and exceedingly dangerous.

YOGI BEAR (December)Jellystone Park has been losing business, so greedy Mayor Brown decides to shut it down and sell the land. That means families will no longer be able to experience the natural beauty of the outdoors — and, even worse, Yogi and Boo Boo will be tossed out of the only home they’ve ever known. Faced with his biggest challenge ever, Yogi must prove that he really is “smarter than the average bear” as he and Boo Boo join forces with their old nemesis Ranger Smith to find a way to save Jellystone Park from closing forever.

3D Film Factory has released the first production-ready, cost-effective, durable and precise 3D camera system – the 3D-BS Pro Rig. This 3D beam-splitter rig was specifically designed for use with the Red One cameras, as well as, other larger, broadcast quality cameras.

“Up until now, there’s only a few high-end facilities offering 3D rigs for Red One cameras and they’re very expensive. So we set out to create a quality 3D Red system most filmmakers could afford. We’re interested in proliferating 3D production by making it accessible. The result was the 3D-BS Pro Rig, a great 3D rig for the Reds, that shoots incredible 3D at a fraction of the cost,” said company president Karl Kozak.

The company’s new 3D-BS (beam-splitter) Pro Rig allows users to manually adjust both the camera convergence settings (1° to 5°) and the inter-ocular (camera-to-camera) distances from 0″ to 6″. It’s constructed of black anodized aluminum that’s virtually indestructible, with a weight of approximately 32 lbs. Its durable frame adjusts to fit almost any pair of large-sized, broadcast quality cameras, including but not limited to; Red One, Sony, Canon, Panasonic, Silicon Imaging and JVC.

“It’s really that easy to start shooting 3D images, you just need a few good tools and some training”, said Kozak. “Of course, to achieve superior 3D, you’ll need a stereographer. We use one on all of our 3D productions, because the cinematographer can’t do it all. As a result, we hire out professional stereographers for 3D training and 3D productions worldwide.”

This time, they’ve brought some friends – new rumors of Terminator 2 getting dimensionality, and a claim that Ridley Scott is “breathing down the neck of executives at Universal to get them to approve making a 3D version of his new $200 million epic, Robin Hood
