Dallas likes to do things big. Even the video display is big, huge really. The display measuring 160 feet across and 72 feet high is the largest in the world. But Sunday a Jersey based company took control of the big board to display what was touted as the first live 3D Broadcast on giant screens. I thought it was just a display because I always thought broadcast originated from one place and is sent to another. Maybe I’m just being technical.
History began with the beginning of the second half and mercifully ended with about 8:10 left in the third quarter. Bad history, but history nonetheless. Maybe its the Jersey boys from HDLogix being in Dallas or maybe this was just a grand experiment. But, it was the consensus of all that it was a monumental flop, you could even call it a Texas sized disaster. Using anaglyph red and blue glasses is not the best 3D under the best circumstances. They are ok if you are watching a web 3D video. It’s small and the imperfections and color shift caused by anaglyph isn’t too noticeable. On a 160 x 72 foot screen the imperfections of the system were magnified 1000 fold. Not only that but it was reported that the 2d to 3D conversion process just could handle the size of the screen properly. The end result, the only cheers it got was when it was turned off.
3D has come a long way since Hondo and House of Wax. But move over guys this debacle just pushed 3D back a few notches. Never fear, the early reports of James Cameron’s Avatar should make all those fans who watched this display forget about it quickly. Maybe Jerry Jones should give all those in attendance free tickets to make up for it?!
