3D Movies Do Not Compare to 3D Gaming According to Sony

With Sony 3D TV’s and 3D gaming on the Playstation 3 being released very soon, Sony is beginning to push 3D in a big way. A spokesperson for Sony in a recent interview announced that Sony hopes to sell as many 3D HD TV’s as quickly as possible, probably because they are a little behind the curve, as Panasonic and Samsung 3D displays have been on the market for months now. Sony is saying that merely watching 3D movies is nothing in comparison to actually experiencing 3D like you do with games. The spokesperson said that, “we’ve seen this in action and I must admit that I think 3D gaming is much more compelling than 3D movies because once you’ve experienced a game in 3D you’ll want to buy a 3D TV. China’s First 3D Video Camera

According to recent reports a glasses free 3D video camera has surfaced on the technological savvy streets of China. The Chinese company ‘Rich’ developed the first 3D capable video camera to be available in China which offers users stereoscopic 3D visuals on an LCD of 3.2 inches, without the need for specialist viewing glasses. NVIDIA Demonstrates Online 3D Streaming

NVIDIA in conjunction with Microsoft recently demonstrated live 3D video streaming over the internet at Computex in Taipei, Taiwan. Using a PC with NVIDIA 3D Vision technology, Microsoft Silverlight and IIS Smooth Streaming, audiences witnessed a 3D music video streamed live via the internet. Phil Eisler, the General Manager of 3D Vision technology at NVIDIA announced that, “we’ve been collaborating with Microsoft to enable 3D in an Internet browser so that it’s very simple to use. Just click on a 3D video and it plays in 3D, using the latest 3D Vision Silverlight-based video player and NVIDIA 3D Vision. Internet users can now enjoy 3D video content streamed in high-definition (HD) quality and viewed at full resolution. This is another great benefit of having a 3D PC.” To use this technology at home, consumers will require a NVIDIA 3D Vision capable PC with the latest 3D Vision drivers and the Microsoft Siliverlight browser plug-in installed. If the consumers technology meets these requirements then 3D Vision based 3D content can be streamed from any website supporting it. Sharp Adds 3D to Quattron Displays

Sharp recently announced that it will be adding 3D to its line-up of Quattron LV displays. The Quattron TV technology already offers audiences an extra pixel of color (yellow) and now it will offer stereoscopic 3D. The new 3D capable Sharp display is currently on display in Japan and is expected to be released next month.

 

The Quattron LV 3D range are 39mm thick due to the technologies LED back-lighting and come in four different screen sizes. The 3D technology will be available in screen sizes of 40”, 46”, 52” and 60-inches. To view 3D content on the Quattron displays, consumers will need to purchase a set of 3D viewing glasses known as the AN-3DG10 which will be made available in a variety of colors. Samsung Dominates 3D TV Industry with 90% of Sales

According to recent data, Samsung is leading the 3D TV market with an estimated 90% of worldwide sales. Around 300,000 3D TV’s have been sold across the globe with around 270,000 of those purchased being Samsung 3D displays. Initially Samsungs only contender for sales in the 3D market was Panasonic, however other electronic giants such as Sony, LG, Sharp, Mitsubishi and Toshiba will all soon be releasing their 3D technologies onto the consumer market.

MSI Demonstrate the Wind Top AE2420 All-in-One 3D PC

MSI recently showcased its latest technology, the Wind Top AE2420 ‘All-in-One’ 3D PC. The 3D technology was showcased in Taiwan at the 30th Computex event held in Taipei. The Wind Top is the first 3D touch screen technology in the world according to MSI and it offers audiences a beautiful 3D experience. The technology utilizes a 120Hz, 24-inch high resolution panel to display 3D content and offers users touch-operated 3D gaming. The Wind Top AE2420 uses built-in 3D station technology, an Atom processor, the latest Intel Core I Series high performance core computing series and 3D ‘Infinity shutter glasses’. 3D PC Industry to Top $34 Billion by 2014

According to recent research conducted by the Jon Peddie Research Company, an estimated 75 million 3D PC’s will be purchased by consumers by the year 2014. The company is predicting that under a million 3D capable PC’s will be purchased in 2010 and that the industry will raise around $640 million. However, the company believes that by 2014, over 75 million 3D PC’s will be sold and the 3D PC industry will thrive. The industry in 2014 is estimated to gross over $34 billion from 3D PC hardware, with an additional  $4.5 billion coming from stereoscopic 3D content.

Japan Invests Billions in Futuristic Holograph Technology

NHK the Japanese equivalent of the UK’s BBC recently committed itself to bringing the first holographic TV’s (now being referred to as Holo-TV’s) to consumers by 2020. The company recently invested £2.8 billion in the holographic project that will offer realistic visuals to audiences. According to Sony engineers, the Holo-TV’s will resemble a large book laid out on the floor. Lasers will then project a series of images that will appear to float in the middle of the platform and can be viewed from every angle without the need for 3D glasses. Japan is so confident in the project that the country has offered holographic broadcasts of the 2022 FIFA World Cup to the world if Japan is selected as the host nation for the tournament. Next month will see the South African held tournament offered to audiences worldwide in stereoscopic 3D for the first time ever which has caused a tremendous amount of excitement for sports fans. LG Showcases Worlds Largest Ultra High Definition 3D Display

At the Society for Information Display (SID) event, ‘Display Week 2010’, LG showcased a variety of its upcoming technology. The technology on display included LG LCD displays that utilize both stereoscopic 3D and in-plane switching (IPS) to improve picture quality as well as what LG is claiming to be ‘the world’s largest 3D display’. LG demonstrated an extensive line-up of displays including a 47” 3D LCD unit and a 47” TV panel that utilizes a liquid lens to remove the need for 3D viewing glasses when wanting to see 3D content. Also on display was LG’s 84” ultra high definition (UHD) 3D display. The technology is being described as the ‘world’s largest 3D display’ by LG. The impressive 84” 3D technology offers audiences a resolution of 3840 x 2160 which is around four times the resolution of standard HD displays. No other details are yet known on this technology apart from that it utilizes polarized glasses.

Are Audiences Growing Tired of 3D Ticket Premiums?

Shrek Forever After 3D, the fourth installment of the DreamWorks Animation franchise had a weaker opening weekend than the studio had hoped for when it opened in the U.S to just $71.2 million. Yet despite it being labeled as a failure by many critics, audience reactions to the film and takings from 3D screens are very positive. In its opening weekend Shrek Forever After grossed $71.2 million domestically, which is a substantial decrease in comparison to the $122 million that Shrek the Third totaled three years ago.
