No. Households With a 3D TV Set to Jump

You’ve probably heard some stories about major sporting events being produced for 3D. Recent events like this week’s All-Star Home Run Derby, the recent World Cup and the Masters golf tournament are fueling demand for 3D TV at a time when relatively few households own 3D-capable TV sets. But the consumer electronics supply chain is hard at work bringing more 3D TV sets to market. As many as 5.99 million 3D TV sets will ship worldwide by the end of this year, according to IMS Research. But the big growth remains ahead:

More than 218 million 3D TV sets will ship between 2010 to 2015.  Also, by the end of 2015, more than 241 million household will have a 3D Blu-ray Disc player, and more than 280 million will have an HD set-top box, many of which are capable of supporting 3D.

Maybe all of that volume will bring more service providers off the fence to support the technology. Comcast, DirecTV and, to a lesser extent, AT&T, have jumped out to support some of the earliest 3D TV programming, including the ESPN 3D channel that featured dozens of World Cup matches over the last month.

For other service providers, however, 3D TV remains a work in progress. Verizon has pledged to support 3D TV by the end of this year, but it has yet to publicly discuss further details of the service or channels it will offer.   Also, while early rollouts have stirred excitement about the technology, there have been minor glitches and other concerns. DirecTV and the YES Network offered the first New York Yankees game in 3D TV earlier this month, but a problem, reportedly in a fiber network connection, kept 3D features from kicking in right away. Sony also recently became the latest consumer electronics–maker, after Samsung, to issue a health warning about 3D TV.

But in its report, “3D Video & Gaming in the Home,” IMS Research said that ongoing releases of 3D theater movies, as well as competition in the home entertainment and consumer electronics sector, will help create a 3D TV market with high volume and aggressive pricing that narrows the gap in prices between 3D and 2D TV sets. IMS said that over the next five years the majority of high -end large-screen TV sets and Blu-ray Disc players will likely support 3D. The often overlooked base of 3D-capable HD set-top boxes will also help, as it will inspire content companies to invest in developing more 3D content, IMS said.

3D YouTube coming soon to a monitor near you !

A Sony studio exec recently was drumming up support for Sony PlayStation’s future capability to game in 3D when he mentioned that YouTube will be supporting 3D content over the next 12 months as well – and you’ll be able to watch that on the PlayStation 3. And as you start taking 3D pictures of your family or 3D camcorder movies, you can play those back on PS3, too.

Obviously, people who want to enjoy 3D content will need to buy all new hardware that supports 3D, all of which Sony plans to sell you.  To watch YouTube, in 3D for example, you’ll need a 3D display and a HDMI 1.4 compliant video card.  you’ll also need a TV or computer OS that supports 3D.

A YouTube 3D gallery already exists here.  You can find existing 3D YouTubes by seaching for yt3d:enable=true (thanks) and, if your hardware supports 3d, you can watch YouTube in 3D now.  But there is no consolidated 3D YouTube protocol.

Sony (SNE) is also one of a few Google (GOOG) manufacturing partners on GoogleTV (Logitech being the other), so it would not be surprising to see 3D built into Sony’s GoogleTV offering, which debuts later this year.  It will also be interesting to see how quickly these interfaces make their way to mobile devices.

How long will it be before 3dtube.com is taken… err, it already is. I just checked !

Avatar overload?

It was announced this week that James Cameron’s box office destructor Avatar will be released again, just over 8 months after its initial run that started in December last year.

It seems as if the film’s $750 million box office success hasn’t satisfied 20th Century Fox, as it could have earned even more if almost every 3D screen had to stop running Avatar and start running Disney’s Alice in Wonderland because of contractual obligations. Read the rest of this entry »

Will new Titanic sink 2D-to-3D conversions?

After much speculation, it seems that James Cameron’s blockbuster Titanic will indeed receive 3D treatment and be released in April 2012 on the 100th anniversary of the ship’s tragic sinking, confirmed by an article that ran in the LA Times this week.

But the more interesting question at hand is: Can the post-production conversion process take a flat film and give it more depth as well as more box office legs? Read the rest of this entry »

European cinemas scramble to embrace 3D

Cinemas in Europe are scrambling to pick up the technology that enables them to project in 3D, as major studios start to release more consistent 3D blockbusters.

Subtitling for Stereographic Media Can be a Real Challenge – 3DVision

If you live in an English-speaking country you probably rarely see subtitles when you go to watch a movie in the cinema, unless the movie is a foreign one of course or some of the characters talk in a foreign language. But if English is not your official language and you are not watching a local movie, but the most recent Hollywood blockbuster title, then you will either see subtitles or in some occasions get the movie audio doubled in your local language. And while doing subtitles for 2D movies is actually not a serious challenge for anyone now (not meaning it is an easy task when it is being done right), when we are talking about a 3D movie that needs subtitles, then you actually have a serious challenge in front of you… Read the rest of this entry »

3D PC Industry to Top $34 Billion by 2014

According to recent research conducted by the Jon Peddie Research Company, an estimated 75 million 3D PC’s will be purchased by consumers by the year 2014. The company is predicting that under a million 3D capable PC’s will be purchased in 2010 and that the industry will raise around $640 million. However, the company believes that by 2014, over 75 million 3D PC’s will be sold and the 3D PC industry will thrive. The industry in 2014 is estimated to gross over $34 billion from 3D PC hardware, with an additional  $4.5 billion coming from stereoscopic 3D content.
