Picross 3D in Europe this February

No release date has been announced yet but rumors says that Picross 3D is to come! picross-3d Inspired by the familiar Picross puzzle, Picross 3D was developed by HALL Laboratory. Players make marks in squares based on clues about how many in each row or column should be numbered, , in which players make marks in But Picross 3D starts with cubes instead of squares, with each mark chipping away at the cube to reveal a voxel-based 3D object. Picross 3D for DS was one of the titles announced by Nintendo at E3, but not dated. Cubed3 reports that Nintendo has confirmed the February 5 date.

James Cameron’s highly anticapated film Avatar has set a date for their 3D video game to be realeased with in this year

James-Camerons-Avatar-1954 James Cameron’s upcoming sci-fi movie, Avatar, is one of the most anticipated films of the year. Fourteen years in the making, Cameron’s magnum opus attempts to create an entire world, with fantastic creatures, a whole ecosystem and, of course, a terrible conflict. Set in 2035, Avatar’s story is set on a planet called Pandora. Entire mountains float high above a lush, green forestland that, at night, glows with a gorgeous, colourful biolumescence, The plot revolves round Jake Sully, a paralysed ex-marine who finds out that his brother had been part of a clandestine military operation. Humans can’t breath the air on mineral rich Pandora, so the military develop the ability to assume control of a human/alien hybrid, the titular avatars, from off world. Jake is talked into taking over his brother’s avatar to mine the planet’s mineral, while fighting off the usually peaceful indigenous species, the Na’vi. As allegories go, it’s hardly the most subtle. Nor is the plot summary the easiest to follow (so lord knows what the movie will be like). But Cameron’s world and creatures are fascinating creations. And what better way to draw you into that world than a video game that uses the same 3D technology as the movie? I was bundled into a dark room on Ubisoft’s E3 2009 show floor for an prestigious peak of the new game, stripped of my electronic equipment, (but hopefully not my dignity). Dominating the room was a prototype of a 103-inch 3D plasma screen. While my brain ticked away trying to work out how I could pinch it, we were given a presentation by Hollywood producer, Jon Landau. He explained that the Avatar video game will not follow the plot of the movie, but will show another side of Pandora. We were invited to put on the snazzy 3D glasses and watch as the game was demonstrated. Put in the shoes of a human military soldier, the demo showed a chunky and colourful third person shooter, familiar to anyone who’s played a video game. However, the real stunner was viewing the game in full stereoscopic 3D. It was astonishing, with an incredible depth of field that stretched into the distance. The lush greens of the forest leapt from the screen, and the attention to detail in each tree branch and overhanging vine was impressively intricate. Watching the military blast their way through hammerhead beasts, the vicious Viperwolves and engaging in combat with the Na’vi, you couldn’t help but flinch as the foes came barreling towards you. Of course, by the time the game is released this winter very few people will actually own 3DTV’s, so it will be up to the game to provide engaging gameplay. Initially the demo seemed to be a frantic, action-packed shooter, but perhaps little more. Until it was revealed that at some point in the game, you will have to choose between the human military -with their big guns and bigger mechs- or the Na’vi. And this is where it gets more interesting. The Na’vi don’t have access to powerful weaponry, but wield bows and swords with great skill. Most importantly, they are in tune with the nature of their world, allowing them to mount giant flying creatures and swoop through the jungles of Pandora. Here, you can see the detail in the animation, as the great orange and red beast soars though the air, wings flapping delicately in the breeze. Even without the glasses, it’s an arresting sight. Seeing Avatar did feel like a glimpse into the future of visuals in video games. Here and now, the 3D movement is just getting off the ground. The chances are that very few people will actually get to see Avatar running how it was meant to be seen, but it’s a fascinating step in that direction. When 3D enabled televisions become more affordable and prevalent, we could see most, if not all, video games offered with 3D. It’s a way off yet, but ducking out of the way of a leaping viperwolf in a vicious firefight is evidence enough for me that the 3D revolution is coming. Source: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/

Suss Microtec Secures a “Strategic Edge” in a Booming 3D Market

Suss Microtec (a back-end semiconductor tool vendor Germany) joins the Taiwan-based 3D chip integration equipment consortium Adstac. The company expects that the move secures a “strategic edge” in a booming future market. Suss hopes to participate in the production value chain for a market it believes will offer strong growth in the future. A study predicted that between 2008 -2012, production volume is expected to be close to one billion units. Stacked memory devices and CMOS image sensors will make up for the largest part of 3D chips; also LEDs are going to jump onto the 3D train. Suss will join a research program of the Taiwan-based Industrial Technology Research Institute. Within the scope of its research, the institute has set up Adstac (Advanced Stacked-System Technology and Application Consortium), a multinational consortium dedicated to set up a demo production line for 3D chip manufacturing on 300mm wafers. Suss spokesperson said, “We want to join the research activities. This gives us a strategic position when commercial production will take off.” source: eetimes.eu
