Direct TV is Going 3D
What do you think is better than HD (High Definition)? HD in 3D, of course! It would seem that the folks are DirecTV are planning to launch an all HD 3D channel sometime in 2010. This will be possible thanks to a new DirecTV satellite being launched sometime soon, and should be fully operational by March 2010. With that in place, you should be served a variety of movies and sports that conform to the latest 3D standard. The good news in here is that all this should work just fine with your DirectTV HD box after a firmware update; but the bad news is that you’ll probably a need a new TV that is compatible with 3D, and there should be plenty of such TVs announced at CES 2010. Will be all be watching 3D HD movies by the end of 2010? We certainly hope so.

A 3DGUY Tale
Let’s start out by talking a little bit about the evolution of 3D. You may have heard the news recently about 3D Footage of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth shot back in 1953. You might think, wow, 3D was around way back then. However, if you are a 1950’s film fan, you might remember Vincent Price in the House of Wax or Alfred Hitchcock’s Dial M for Murder originally presented in 3D. The truth is, is that 3D, or more accurately Stereoscopic 3D, was first created with still pictures in the 1840’s with a device called a stereopticon. Think of it as an early forerunner of the Viewmaster, which started in 1939 and reached its height in popularity in the mid-60’s.
Festival of 3D Tech and 3D Films: 3D Stereo MEDIA

It showcased a series of seminars and presentations tackling everything about the aspects of 3D stereo, today and beyond. It also features an exhibit showing the state-of- the-art in many areas of 3D, in particular for 3D in the cinema and in the home for advertisement, and for communication.

Affordable 3D Beam-Splitter Rig For Red One Cameras by 3D Film Factory
3D Film Factory has released the first production-ready, cost-effective, durable and precise 3D camera system – the 3D-BS Pro Rig. This 3D beam-splitter rig was specifically designed for use with the Red One cameras, as well as, other larger, broadcast quality cameras.

“Up until now, there’s only a few high-end facilities offering 3D rigs for Red One cameras and they’re very expensive. So we set out to create a quality 3D Red system most filmmakers could afford. We’re interested in proliferating 3D production by making it accessible. The result was the 3D-BS Pro Rig, a great 3D rig for the Reds, that shoots incredible 3D at a fraction of the cost,” said company president Karl Kozak.
The company’s new 3D-BS (beam-splitter) Pro Rig allows users to manually adjust both the camera convergence settings (1° to 5°) and the inter-ocular (camera-to-camera) distances from 0″ to 6″. It’s constructed of black anodized aluminum that’s virtually indestructible, with a weight of approximately 32 lbs. Its durable frame adjusts to fit almost any pair of large-sized, broadcast quality cameras, including but not limited to; Red One, Sony, Canon, Panasonic, Silicon Imaging and JVC.
“It’s really that easy to start shooting 3D images, you just need a few good tools and some training”, said Kozak. “Of course, to achieve superior 3D, you’ll need a stereographer. We use one on all of our 3D productions, because the cinematographer can’t do it all. As a result, we hire out professional stereographers for 3D training and 3D productions worldwide.”

The war on the dead continues…in 3D!
Sony Pictures is planning to produce Zombieland in 3D.
3D films are progressively becoming a hit for maximizing profits, giving many recent films — such as Sony’s “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs” — a momentous increase.
Zombieland producer Gavin Polone, said, “Everyone had fun watching (the first) Zombieland; making it a more visceral experience can only make it better. I don’t think you want to see ‘Ordinary People’ in 3-D. But Zombieland is clearly one movie that will benefit from (the technique).”
Sony has closed deals with Polone and director Ruben Fleischer to return for the sequel, with Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick returning to pen the screenplay.
Zombieland cost $24 million and has earned $85.2 million worldwide to date though can only be viewed on selected places.

SUMA: Squeezable interface for 3D content
Cambridge Consultants, a product design and development firm, introduced SUMA, a uniquely intuitive and very low-cost squeezable user-interface technology aimed at 3D content interaction.

Suma is said to have full 3D highly sensitive control which brings gamers to another level! The patent for the sensor-system is still pending.
Suma’s sensor system converts 3D deformation of a squeezed object into a software-readable form. This enables highly sensitive control by finger movements and whole-hand grip without the need for cumbersome gloves or sensors.
Duncan Smith, head of Consumer Product Development at Cambridge Consultants explained, “Our hands are extraordinary instruments for control and communication. One of our earliest instincts as babies is to grip and grasp, and about a quarter of the motor cortex of the human brain is devoted to the muscles of the hand. Yet current input devices for computers and games do not fully exploit these capabilities.”
A prototype gaming-controller based on the new squeezable Suma technology will be seen at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas from 7-10 January 2010.

Shigeru Miyamoto’s Opions on 3D and 2D gaming
2D vs 3D what is in store and where are we going? What usually starts out as a friendly discussion can easily turn into a venom spewing argument about what’s better, what sells more, and if the 2d era is still relevant.
It seems Mr. Miyamoto, someone who’s made his fair share of both 2d and 3d titles, weighed in on a similar discussion in the latest Nintendo Power. Miyamoto thinks that not everything needs to be 3d while conceding that there are huge benefits to it. On the the 2d front, he says these games should focus on fun and gameplay and not worry too much about visual experience.
What he says could be misconstrued to mean 2d games look like a pile of brownie mix, but on second thought you can take it to mean sometimes 2d games try too hard to be like 3d games and lose focus on the important aspect (i.e. FUN). This couldn’t be more true as New Super Mario Bros. Wii is a blast to play and doesn’t require too much skill to just pop in and have some fun .
2D gaming is far from being over although it’s fears are valid with the new breed of 3D games and gamers it is a great lesson in sustainability and weathering time. Lets just keep it fun and play nice there is room for 2D and 3D. Right?
