Bernard Mendiburu Interview

While at the Dimension 3 Forum in Pantin, France we took a 3D course by Bernard Mendiburu, a Digital Stereographer and writer, and then afterwards interviewed him about his book and his 3D course. Bernard Mendiburu is a digital artist who specializes in visual effects, digital cinema technologies, and 3D. He took part of Disney’s animated feature film, Meet the Robinsons, and has recently wrote a book on 3D called “3D Movie Making: Stereoscopic Digital Cinema from Script to Screen”, which is available in paperback and also as an electronic download to the Amazon Kindle. The paperback version includes a DVD which comes with various 2D and 3D images that demonstrate concepts and techniques, Adobe After Effects project files, a resource list of software tools, and tutorials that demonstrate an array of 3D techniques. Mastering 3D Post-Production was the name of Bernard’s 3D course at the Dimension 3 Expo this year. It’s focus was on presenting the workflow that is specific to post-production stereoscopic 3D projects and understanding the new methods and tools that are needed for editing 3D in the digital post-production phase. The training was fourteen-hours long held over 2 days (June 5th and 6th 2009) with only 10 trainees allowed to participant, and took place in Sèvres, Paris area of France. The “Mastering 3D Post-Production” workshop covered an introduction to 3D, filming errors to avoid, basics of stereoscopic 3D, filming to editing stage including the user interface systems, tools, workflow, and editing software needed, and practical exercises were giving for editing 3D projects. More information on Bernard Mendiburu can be found on his website http://mendiburu.net.

Director of Dimension 3 Expo

While at the Dimension 3 Expo outside of Paris, France in early June of this year, Executive Producer, Al Caudullo, interviewed the director of the Dimension 3 Expo, Stephan Faudeux, for 3DGuy. The Dimension 3 Expo 2009 (June 2-4) was an international forum on Stereoscopic 3D that has been organized by Advance Rapide Communication for the last 3 years now. With an attendance of only  200 people in 2007and only 300 people in 2008, this year’s D3 Expo brought out 1,200 people from 25 countries with an increase in 3D  programs, bilingual training sessions on 3D production, key speakers, and technical and cultural expertise at Pantin’s Centre national de la Danse, just 5 minutes outside of Paris, France. Dimension 3 Expo targets three markets: the professionals who are working in 3D, training for people in 3D, and the consumer who wishes to watch in 3D. This brought together conferences, master classes, pro workshops, and pro exhibitions for the 3D Professional; a talent marketplace and training campus for 3D Training; and a complete 3D immersion, discovery, and festival for the public and 3D Consumer.  Dimension 3 (D3) is all about stereoscopic 3D in all markets, movies, broadcasting, visualization, gaming, and more and includes small and large companies, the consumer and the professional, the user and the newbie alike. It is a place to experience 3D in an environment of consumers, gamers, producers, and professionals unlike anything you normally have the opportunity to experince. We look forward to next years D3 Expo in France! A little more about the director of Dimension 3: Stéphan Faudeux has hosted over 150 talks on new audio-visual technologies, especially on High-Definition and digital cinema. In August of 2003 he joined Avance Rapide, which works with all professional actors in the Media & Entertainment field, companies, public organizations and institutions. He is founder and CEO of the Club HD. Since 2004, the Club HD has developed a French and European environment for reflection on High-Definition and its technical, creative and financial implications on the production and post-production chain.

Jason Goodman 21st Century 3D

Jason Goodman is the founder and CEO of 21st Century 3D and stereography for the 2009 3D movie, Call of the Wild 3D, on location in Montana of last year. Jason designed a 3D beam splitter rig for the movie, Call of the Wild 3D, called the BX1, which is “one of the smallest and lightest self-contained 3D beam splitter cameras available.”1 The EX1 3D beam splitter rig system was then improved upon and re-designed to create the EX2 3D beam splitter rig, which “…is primarily being designed to accommodate larger, higher- resolution cameras, including the RED One, the Arri D21, the Phantom, and the Sony EX3.” 1 The EX2 3D beam splitter rig system is built for practicality taking various factors into consideration for it’s consideration: operation, moving and carrying the gig, putting it on steady cams, shipping it, etc. to make it as light and sturdy as possible while allowing it to have all the adjustability you would need at the same time. The EX2 3D beam splitter rig system is the first stereoscopic recording device available for sale or rent through 21st Century 3D and was being shown at the Cine Gear Expo, a Film and Digital Media Conference in Los Angeles that took place in early June.3 However, we have a couple photos of a dual Sony PMW EX3 on  the EX2 3D beam splitter rig system.
