3D Scandle Restraining Order Sought Between Two Medical 3D Animators
A anonymous company that produces computer-generated images for publications including but not limited to Time magazine has brought a High Court action alleging another firm is reproducing and selling its material. Moorefilm Ltd, which produces and sells computer-generated 3D medical illustrated images and animations to a large range of clients and distributors through Getty Images, the world’s largest distributor of images, is seeking restraining orders against a firm set up by former employees. Mr Justice Roderick Murphy granted Moorefilm Ltd, trading as 3D4medical.com and medicalrf. com, permission to bring its injunction proceedings at short notice against WKG Media Ltd, trading as the Science Picture Company, and against Eoin Winston, Eoin Kavanagh and Michael Grant. The court was told the three individual defendants were former employees of Moorefilm who left the company on good terms but had since used Moorefilm images and animations on its website. The three defendants had denied the claims as false and unsustainable in correspondence with Moorefilm, the court was told. Seeking the short service order on an ex-parte basis (one side only represented), Gabriel Gavigan said his client Moorefilm was seeking an injunction restraining the defendants from using and selling what it claims are its 3D models. A number of Moorefilm’s images had appeared on covers of Time, National Geographic and Newsweek magazines, Mr Gavigan said. It is alleged that during his employment with Moorefilm, Mr Winston was given a back-up drive of all of Moorefilm’s models to keep at his home in the event of a break-in or fire at the offices. When he finished his employment, he had not returned the disk drive despite giving assurances he would do so, Moorefilm alleges. In an affidavit, John Moore, ceo of 3D4medical.com, said WKG Media was incorporated by Mr Winston and Mr Kavanagh while employees of Moorefilm. Mr Grant was the company secretary. He said correspondence was entered into with the defendants last June when the defendant company launched its image collection for sale on its website. Mr Moore said that collection was based on information obtained while in Moorefilm’s employment. Source: http://www.irishtimes.com
MIT Devolping a 3D Mapping Drone
The MIT Technology Review has unearthed a new laser-based 3D mapping robot that can produce similar results to those of its $100,000 competitor for a fraction of the cost. Funded by the US Army, researched and developed at the Stevens Institute of Technology have now demonstrated the Remotely Operated and Autonomous Mapping System (ROAMS, for short), which employs a mirror-based LIDAR system that bounces a laser off a rapidly rotating mirror and gleans environmental information from how long it takes for each pulse to bounce back. An array of video cameras and IR proximity sensors add to this recon bot’s sentience, though at this point you will still need to be within a mile’s range to operate it. So not quite yet ready for solo space travel, but more then capable for gathering data on our own planet.

Michael Jackson 3D Scan
Michael Jackson had a 3D scan taken of his body in 1997. Some suspected that Michael planned to build a virtual reality double of himself. Michael Jackson Always was on the sharp end of the cutting edge. Perhaps he was gearing up for a new video or a game or it was to be used on his grand tour which we have all heard so much about. In any case the genius of Michael Jackson becomes more and more apparent everyday along side a new controversy a new master piece of Michael’s is uncovered. Truly proving the possibilities of life after death.
With Michael Jackson’s recent passing the scavengers are having a field day and his 3D scan data has been put on sale by an anonymous seller for one million dollars. This seller says ever so disrespectfully that: “it [the 3D scan] immortalized him at the age of 37, before his nose was disfigured and when he was in the prime of life”. How he got this scan is a mystery and how he is not being sued is even more mysterious.
I would venture to say that this data will probably be bought by one of the many studios to be used in the future perhaps for holographic concerts a games or any number of perverse means of capitalizing on the death of the King of Pop.

3D Mandelbulb That Doesn’t Travel

3D Mandelbulb
The fascinating object known to the world as the Mandelbrot, has been capturing the public’s attention and imagination for over three decades. Over the last 30 years the Mandelbrot’s hypnotic colors and eye pleasing patterns have being drawing attention to them from all over the world. It is known as a ‘fractal’, which is a type of shape that yields detail forever, regardless of how far you zoom into the object.
It was found by following a relatively easy math formula. However, in the end the object is still only 2D and flat, which means there are no shadows, perspective, light sourcing or depth to the Mandelbrot. However, the image featured in this article shows a potential 3D version of the same fractal shape.

Dave Mathews 3D
The Dave Matthews Band is coming to a theater near you on December 11—in 3D stereoscopy, thanks to In Concert 3D. In the many discussions about the promise of digital cinema, enthusiasts have always pointed out that, on off hours, digital cinemas can host sporting events, concerts, cultural occasions and even corporate meetings. That promise has been realized to a great degree. I count myself among the happy attendees of the New York Metropolitan Opera at my local Los Angeles movie theatre.
“With the Dave Matthews [movie], the idea was to mimic a concert,” explains AEG Live’s John Rubey, who is executive producer and president of AEG’s Network LIVE. “The movie features Dave Matthews at the Austin City Limits festival, Ben Harper from the Mile High Music Festival and Gogo Bordello from the Pine Music Festival.”
“We’ve done some 80 cinema events more cinema music events than anyone else in the country,” adds Rubey. “We know fans like to come out and experience it together. Could we capture it cost effectively and will it deliver an extraordinary experience? Coming out of 2009, the answer was yes.”
Rubey notes that “AEG was very fortunate to create a partnership with Action 3D Productions to enable us to scale the capture.” InConcert 3D will come out with 150 performances in 2010, says Rubey. The Dave Matthews Band concert on Dec. 11 will be the only title in 2009. The 90-minute 3D film will be shown for one week in more than 300 movie theaters around the country.
Action 3D Productions chair Jeffrey B. Lewis reports that, with his partner Wayne Miller, a music video/commercials director, they have come up with a way of cutting costs in capturing live events in 3D. They use a mix of cameras and rigs; Sony, Fujinon and other companies have been helpful in providing new technologies. The 8-camera set up for the Dave Matthews Band concert also included a very small German camera that was used with a Steadicam rig and a set of long lenses from Fujinon.
Lewis and Rubey declined to release the budget for creating this first 3D concert film, but did allow that it was “many many times smaller than the budget for U2 3D,” which, notes Rubey was captured at multiple events around the world. “I always believed that 3D was the right way to release concerts,” says Rubey. “It was just a matter of whether the time was right. If the 3D premium was more than 50 percent than 2D, then the timing wasn’t right.” Although Rubey declined to give the premium percentage achieved for the Dave Matthews concert, he said it was “close enough, so we all jumped.”
“We are a virtual shop,” says Lewis, in explanation of one of the ways they keep costs down. “We don’t own any of the equipment. Because the equipment is evolving rapidly, that enables us to use state of the art equipment. We also were able to source equipment. Some vendors made special rigs for us.” The concert film was postproduced in 3D at Jade Productions and Evergreen Films, in Culver City.
The timing of the release, says Rubey, is to take advantage of the window between the releases of two 3D films: Robert Zemeckis’ A Christmas Carol and James Cameron’s Avatar. “The public’s attention will be on 3D,” he says. He also reports that many concerts now have a 3D viewing tent at concerts, which have become very popular, especially with the 18 to 34 demographic.
As to the future distribution of the 3D concert films, Rubey reports that some bands may choose to release them on home video. The press screening was shown off a standard BluRay player, on a JVC 3D television set. Rubey also notes that the concerts were also shot in 2D, for use for online and mobile platforms. “Theatrical is the first window and next, in most cases, putting it out on DVD will be the artist’s decision,” he says. “Our goal is to support the artists by providing new means of distribution.”
The concert footage was shown to a small group of journalists, played back on a BluRay disc onto a JVC 3D TV. “Downstream, there’ll be a 3D opportunities in the home,” says Rubey. “But it’s going to be awhile.” The company is already in discussion with licensing 3D content to BSkyB’s 24/7 3D channel.
“We’ve met with many people,” says Rubey. “Everyone wants to see the ball moved down the field and it’s about more [3D stereoscopic] content and more consumer awareness.”

3D Cityscapes in the Palm of Your Hand Paris 3D
Paris 3D – Google Earth enthused users with the ability to explore the world from the comfort of there desktop. Across the street and across the planet, the zoom and deliver technology changed the way we viewed the landscape — and our expectations of what a map could deliver.
Paris 3D is part of this new generation of maps. Using the same aerial image technology — all new photos from 2009 — the travel app allows users to explore Paris, France.
The app combines the true-life images with the functions of a guide book. Armchair travelers will enjoy reading about the 2000 points of interest, all categorized by interest and location. Tourists actually visiting the City of Lights have even more options. You can plan a walkable route for getting around Paris and, if you veer off the beaten path, use the geo-location features to find your way back to the hotel.
In practical application, Paris 3D works better than expected. The app is a beast! It’s a huge download that should only be attempted when connected to your computer. This is actually a good thing because it means that all the information Paris 3D needs is stored on your device not on the Internet. You’ll be able to plan your itinerary on the flight overseas, and, even better, you won’t be tied in to a costly data plan while roaming about the city.
For an app with so much information, the map is surprisingly responsive. Screen redraw time is minimal — about the same or less as you would get using Google maps — and navigating from map to description and back again is a breeze.
Like any map-based app, you use your fingers to scroll and drag your way around. But, there’s one thing you really need to know if you want to get the most out of Paris 3D. The map starts out with a typical top-down view, if you want to get the full 3D view you’ll need to rotate your viewing perspective. Hold one finger down on the screen, this becomes your anchor point. Now, use the other to rotate the plane of view or to take a 360-degree gander around a building.
It took me a while to figure this out. But, it’s quite impressive once you get the hang of it.
As you browse the Paris streets, double tap any building for more information. The app will provide a list of attractions and points of interest based on your current location.
Paris 3D is the first of a series of city-exploration guidebooks from Mobile 3D City. As my grandpa might say, it’s amazing what they can do with technology these days. Of course, this map app is more than just an awesome showpiece, it’s a practical guidebook for discovering Paris on foot, in a car, or from your living room. I can’t wait to see what cities they do next!
